Why do I feel so upset?
When a person loses their sight it can feel like any other physical or emotional loss, so there is always a period of grieving and bereavement.
How long someone will feel like this and to what extent varies from person to person as everyone experiences sight loss in a very individual way. How a person feels about their sight loss can be influenced by their prognosis, age, character, the extent of support available and whether or not they have other health or dependence issues.
The person may feel that they are the only one experiencing sight loss and, therefore, feel quite isolated and fearful about the future. It is common for people to question why this has happened to them and to experience an initial loss of confidence as daily tasks have to be re-learnt and new ways of coping explored.
